Taking Courses Elsewhere (Transferring Courses from Other Academic Institutions)

Many dismissed students elect to take courses at other institutions in preparation for future readmission. This may be a good option for students who wish to study closer to home and may also be a more cost-effective option for some students. However, all transfer credits must adhere to the standard Undergraduate Admission Transfer Credit Guidelines.

Rules for Dismissed Students taking Courses at Other Institutions

• In general, UConn grants credit for courses that are taken at a regionally accredited, degree-granting college or university, comparable in content and quality to courses offered at UConn, and completed with a minimum grade of “C.”
  • However, to qualify for readmission after dismissal, students must receive grades of B or higher in courses taken after dismissal.
• Go to the Transfer Admissions website for rules pertaining to the accreditation process, as well as for information on how courses offered at Connecticut degree-granting institutions will transfer to the University.
• Upon readmission, courses approved for transfer will be posted to the student’s degree record.
  • Important Note: Grades earned do not follow transferred courses, so the student’s University of Connecticut GPA will not be affected by the addition of transfer courses. Students will receive a “T” for all transfer credits successfully applied to their UConn transcript.
• If you are a dismissed student with a UConn merit scholarship, refer to the Merit Scholarship Terms & Conditions website for information about how any scholarship eligibility will be impacted if you take courses elsewhere before seeking readmission. Notably, students who earn and transfer credits from another College/University to the University of Connecticut are ineligible for reinstatement of their merit-based admissions scholarship. • Students who are considering taking courses at an external institution in preparation for their return to the University of Connecticut are strongly encouraged to meet with a non-degree advisor to discuss their plans for readmission.
  • Students must receive grades of “B” or higher in courses taken after being dismissed in order to qualify for readmission.
  • Students must typically complete courses that will show progress toward their desired degree plan or major. 
• International students must meet with their ISSS Advisor in order to transfer their SEVIS record to a new institution.

Note: Readmission after dismissal is neither automatic nor guaranteed and will be considered favorably only when a student’s readmission application indicates a strong probability for academic success. For more information, visit Returning to UConn.

• For students interested in completing coursework in Connecticut, but not at UConn, the Undergraduate Admissions Office has listed the transfer course equivalencies for all Connecticut universities, colleges, and community colleges.
